The democratic system in South Korea is prone to populist tendencies. It is still healthier than we had hoped for.

The country is seeking a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relationships continues to influence society. There are indications of a secularist culture trend emerging.

Origins

During prehistoric times, the ancestors of modern Koreans survived by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. These people formed tribal states one after another in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metallurgy industry, producing bronze and later iron tools. They traded with other states and introduced cedon paper making block printing art styles, and a written language to Japan.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was established in the southern region of the peninsula. This state adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In this period the inhabitants of Buyeo became part of Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a state that was hierarchical where the monarch and other senior officials were from the aristocracy of the land, whereas the majority of the population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these people and sometimes even required them to join the army or construct fortifications.

Onjo Prince Onjo, a prince from Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo and the state of Baekje towards the end of the time. This new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula and fought with Goguryeo and China’s commanderies in the area. Baekje adopted Confucian ideas into its state beliefs system in 1390 CE and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety into a doctrine. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by everyone and admired by even their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, who ruled from 918 to 1392 CE introduced the world to the Hangul alphabet based on the shapes made by the mouth when it was pronounced. This dramatically improved communication between people and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Woodblock printing and the movable metal type were also refined. It was during this time that the Samguk sagi, or ‘History Of the Three Kingdoms’ was first recorded in 1145 CE.

Development in Korea

The Korean peninsula has been inhabited since Neolithic times and early evidence of human settlements are visible in the form of graves lined with stone, with precious objects like amazonite jewellery being buried along with the dead. Megalithic structures, also known as dolmens, constructed from enormous single stones, are common throughout the country.

Gojoseon became the first political state to be recognized in the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. After that the peninsula was ruled by several states during the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCfrom 635 CE) including Baekje Goguryeo and Silla. Additionally, the northern part of the peninsula was ruled by the Balhae kingdom, which the majority of historians do not consider to be a valid Korean state.

Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje, the most powerful of these states was diminished by the collapse of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern territories in Manchuria, and western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy, flourished for a time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to cooperate in order to expand their territorial holdings. Silla with the help of the Chinese, eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea is entering a post-crisis period the way it develops appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the huge cost of the old system are urging an extensive program of liberalization of capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand, supporters of the old system try to preserve it through nationalist sentiments and by exaggerating fears about possible job losses.

Analysts and academics are divided on the extent to which Korea’s development is being driven by these two trends. This article examines developments to date, by looking at five phases of Korea’s political evolution including illiberal democracy (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) and authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and participatory democracy (2002 to the present). This article also highlights the most important factors that are shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that almost one third of respondents do not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those, 41% said there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% said it contradicted their religious beliefs. 17 percent said they did not comprehend it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that in the United States, where a majority of people do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution movement in Korea focused primarily on educating students and bringing Christ to them. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event attracted a large number of professors, church leaders, and scientists.

The success of the event resulted in the formation of the Korea Association of Creation Research on January 31, 1980. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo, and it received wide attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, in which it reported on its activities and also published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR and some books on the subject that were in print outside of Korea. KACR members taught throughout the nation in universities and churches.

A KACR success was seen at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so keen on the concept of creationism that they raised money and secured support to build an enlightened museum on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION which covers topics in creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has an organization of local branch offices that host talks and seminars to children and community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts, as well as other foreign fashion elements. Similarly, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern jazz and rock and roll. During this time the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became loved by the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers and other instruments.

The economic crisis has formed Korea’s new development paradigm. The primary challenge for the new regime is to find a balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also requires changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining schemes which have been a part of the system prior the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.

The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, 에볼루션 슬롯 those from Buyeo and other regions, as well as migrants from northern China. In the 4th century, in the early part of, Baekje was a major regional power, and expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do in the south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanderies on the border.

The decline of Silla in the late 8th and 9th centuries allowed powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye an eminent noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also was in control of a portion of the present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.

However, his rule was short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935, and then united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla Later, he incorporated Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
